Cube Solver: The Most Advanced and User-Friendly App for Solving the Cube


For those who are interested to build their own Rubik's cube solving robot, want to write cube solving software or just are interested in the way the two-phase-algorithm works in detail can have a look at my fully developed two-phase-solver written in Python. On a Raspberry Pi 3 it solves random cubes within a few seconds with less than 20 moves on average.


If you are interested in an Optimal Cube Solver in the Quarter Turn Metric which runs on the command line under LINUX and WINDOWS, you can download the documented C source code here. An already compiled version for Windows is available here. The program also accepts the file format of Cube Explorer, so you can generate your cubes in Cube Explorer and feed them to this program. Bruce MacKenzie has ported this command line program to run on a MAC (nomen est omen). You can download the program here.

The tables in this implementation take only about 5 MB and are generated within seconds. Nevertheless the package routine solved about 26000 random cubes/hour if the maximum maneuver length was set to 21 moves and about 800 random cubes/hour if it was set to 20 moves maximum length.

This project implements the two-phase-algorithm in its fully developed form to solve Rubik's cube in Python. Though Python is much slower than for example C++ or even Java the implementation is sufficiently fast to solve random cubes in less than 20 moves on average on slow hardware like the Raspberry Pi3 within a few seconds.

If you just want to solve Rubik's cube and play around with its patterns Cube Explorer may be the better choice. But if you want to get a better understanding of the two-phase-algorithm details or you work on a project to build a cube solving robot which solves the cube almost optimal this this may be the right place to look.


This solves the cube described by the definition string with a desired maximum length of 19 moves and a timeout of 2 seconds. If the timeout is reached, the shortest solution computed so far is returned even if it is longer than the desired maximum length.


We solved 1000 random cubes in different scenarios. All computations were done on a Windows 10 machine with anAMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.59 GHz.We distinguish between computations with the standard CPython interpreter and computation with PyPy (pypy3) whichincludes a Just-in-Time compiler which gives a speedup by a factor of about 10.


Possible Problem:The corner you are looking for is in the top layer, but in the wrong position or turned the wrong way around. Turn the cube so that the corner is in the front right top corner then move the corner to the bottom layer by following the following steps.


STEP 5 - COMPLETE THE THIRD LAYER CORNERS (1) First we will put the corners in the correct position (A).You will now have either 0, 1 or ALL the corners pieces will be in their correct positions, either the right way up or reversed.If one corner piece is in the correct corner turn the cube to that this correct corner is in the front top right position. The piece is in the correct position, BUT may not be turned the correct way around.

PrimeCuber software consists of a number of projects. Only the first is required. The others are optional and may be omitted or downloaded later: The main project, PrimeCuber-v2p0.py, contains code andsmall lookup tables to scan, solve and scramble a cube.


If the PrimeCuber program is not already running, run it using the buttons on the SPIKE Prime hub. Press the right button to select the slot number to which the program was downloaded. Then press the center button to run the program.


The program starts in solve mode. In this mode it will solve any cube that is inserted into the turntable. An alternative scramble mode can be selected in which it will scramble any cube that is inserted into the turntable.


PrimeCuber may scan the cube up to three times if it is unable to determine the colors at first. If the scanned colors do not result in a valid pattern, PrimeCuber will stop after the third attempt with the middle button colored orange. If this happens, there may be a number of possible causes. See the troubleshooting section.


The scramble algorithm uses a random state to ensure that all possible scrambled states are equally likely (similar to the method used by the World Cube Association for competitions). The number of moves will be approximately the same as for solving a cube so the scramble will be faster if the large lookup tables have been installed.


The method used to calculate a solution for the cube is based on some pre-calculated lookup tables containintg sequences of moves that solve groups of pieces in stages. The default, small tables included in the PrimeCuber-v2p0 program result in solutions averaging about 42 moves. By using a larger set of lookup tables with more entries, shorter solutions can be caltulated with an average only about 31 moves. With fewer moves, the overall time to solve the cube is reduced. These large tables are contained in the PCMTab4-v2p0-*.llsp3 projects and can be installed on the hub by downloading and running all the projects PCMTab4-v2p0-0 to PCMTab4-v2p0-39 in sequence.


Let's start with the white face. Try to form a plus sign on the top of the cube, matching the colors of the side stickers to the colors of the lateral centers. This step shouldn't be too hard, try to do this without reading the examples below.


Turn your cube upside down because we don't need to work with the white face anymore. We can insert an edge piece from the top-front position to the middle layer using a trick. Do the left or right algorithm depending on which side you have to insert the piece:


1. Hold the cube in your hand having an unsolved yellow corner in the highlighted top-right-front position. 2. Repeat the algorithm until this piece is solved.3. Turn the top layer to bring another unsolved piece in the highlighted position.4. Repeat R' D' R D until that one is also solved.5. Do 3 and 4 for any other unsolved yellow corner.
